The beach was so much fun! We went on Sunday. It was my first time ever really going to the ocean, so I really enjoyed it. It was really beautiful. The water was so salty, and the sun was so hot.

After that we went to Jiufen old street. There I had some taro in ice. It was really good. The place was really nice. I liked it more than the old street in Changhua, but maybe that was because we weren't rushed through it as quickly. There was one part where there was a long stairway with lanterns and shops along the sides. Sasha said that it was used in a Japanese cartoon movie, which is really cool. If I can, I'd like to figure out which movie it was. It's a place I'd really like to see again someday.
The Yang Ming National Park was really interesting. It was great to be able to get out in nature like that, and to be able to see some of Taiwan's natural beauty. The tour guide was really great too, and I could really tell how much she loved the park.

There were so many bugs out there! But it wasn't too difficult to get past that. The second place we went to was really amazing. I've never been to a volcano before, so I really enjoyed being able to see the sulfer burning on the surface.

Then we went to a hot springs. It was actually really relaxing and fun. If I had the chance, I would definitely go again.
We went to Grape King Company. I've never seen how materials like this are made. It was really interesting to be able to see the fermentation labs and the research rooms. They are constantly experimenting to find new and innovative products for the future.

We went on a tour of Taiwan's culture. First we visited a temple in Lukang, Taiwan. It was very beautiful. There was a pond with ducks and turtles. The babies were so cute. There was a long walkway around the pond, and I found myself really drawn to the architecture and to the way the gilding really reflected where we were. It was really hot and though, and sitting down after walking around felt great.

Next we went to another temple. This time it was a Buddhist temple. The temple looked a lot older and had less of a commercial feel to it. It was much less colorful. There were free books, although they were all written in Chinese. The way the books were made reminded me a lot of some of the books I made in a Book Arts class I took at MTSU. I was so glad that I had taken it because I could appreciate them in a different kind of way. I'm not sure whether or not they were hand-made, but the design of one of them is one I remember well.

There was one more temple we visited that was connected to the old street. It was a really nice temple, and more similar to the one before. Although, like the first one, it was a Daoist temple. They also had books and pamphlets. It was really interesting to be able to see the similarities and differences in the temples.

The old street was really long and we didn't have much time to shop because we were running late. I did get to buy something though. I got a figure of Guan Yu, or Kuan Ti,  a god of war. It's really cool. I had to do some research on him afterwards. I also tried a drink made from watermelon juice. It really tasted like straight watermelon juice, which was pretty cool.

After that, we were able to go and paint our own mask. I wanted to make mine red because I've always liked the way they looked. Dr. Jih told me that it looked traditional, which is cool because I've always been interested in the more traditional looks. There were a lot of other masks that looked really cool. Everyone's was good, but they all looked really different. I think it's nice because it reflects how different people are, but everyone is really creative!

The last place we visited was to go around a maze made by the police department. It was really elaborate, with the lights and the mirrors everywhere. It was fun to walk through, and the displays in the middle were really stunning. Overall I had a lot of fun on the trip, but I was really tired by the time it was over.

Blog 1

After spending around 24 hours travelling to Taiwan, I've begun my first experience out of the country. So far, I've met many of the CYCU students in my class. They are so friendly and helpful. I'm really able to have fun and experience the culture of Taiwan.

On July 13, 2011 we took a trip to the Taipei City Traffic Control Center, Taipei Rapid Transit Co. and Asus Co. It was really interesting to see the traffic control monitors. It's good that they are working to lessen traffic, and make the roads safer. Asus was really cool to visit. The bull with a coat made out of computer ships was really cool. I really want one of the good computers they had on display. Either the gamer's computer or the audio one would be awesome to have.

Tomorrow ... off to Changhua!
